It has been a topic of debate among dental professionals and researchers that fluoride may or may not be safe for average daily consumption. Found in tap water, foods, toothpaste brands, and more, its ability to safeguard against tooth decay while strengthening enamel makes it an attractive option for both dentists and patients. But is safe for young smiles? When is it too early to start incorporating fluoride? This article will help to answer these questions and more.

What Does the Research Say About Fluoride & Children?

According to the Journal of Dental Research, a study conducted by Professor Loc Do and colleagues at the University of Queensland Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, School of Dentistry discovered there to be no negative effects of fluoride on some children as it pertains to their executive function and their emotional and behavioral development.

Using studies conducted on children between 2012-2014, the results were formed after interviewing the same kids after 7 or 8 years to see what kind of effect fluoride had. The same measurements for emotional, behavioral development as well as executive functioning remained largely the same between those who received fluoride and those who didn’t.

How Fluoride Can Benefit Your Child’s Smile?

As a parent, you may still feel a bit unsure about the potential of having fluoride added to your child’s next dental visit, but it’s important to remember the countless benefits it can provide.

Not only will your child enjoy a smile that is better protected, but you’ll also discover that with healthier teeth and gums comes improvement in overall health and well-being. When your child isn’t missing school because they do not need dental fillings, dental crowns, and other similar treatments, they’ll remain in class, learning and excelling academically.

While the product only is applied to teeth, it can have wide positive benefits because of how a healthier smile can create more positive mindsets and greater confidence, especially when they’re around their friends at school.

If you’re concerned about starting your child on fluoride at an early age, don’t be. Follow the instructions provided by your child’s pediatric dentist. Once their pearly whites begin to push through the gumline, it’s time to start adding fluoride to their oral hygiene routine so that their teeth look and feel great year after year.
