Any responsible dentist will do all they can to avoid the need for tooth extractions. However, in some cases, the removal of one or more teeth is necessary for a child’s long-term oral health. This process might be intimidating for kids, and you may need to help your little one get through the healing process. What specifically should you do? This blog post provides six practical tips.

Remember They Will Be Numb for a While

After your child’s tooth extraction, you should keep in mind that their mouth will likely stay numb for several hours. This numbness can lead to accidental biting of the cheek, lip, or tongue, so remind your child to be gentle and avoid chewing until the sensation returns. Encourage them not to poke or prod the area with their fingers or tongue to prevent irritation. They should also not try to eat or drink anything hot while their mouth is numb.

Protect the Blood Clot

One of the most important aspects of healing is maintaining the blood clot that forms at the extraction site. The clot acts as a natural barrier, shielding the underlying bone and nerves. You should instruct your child to avoid spitting, using straws, or vigorous rinsing for at least 24 hours, since these actions may dislodge the clot and delay healing.

Provide the Right Diet

For the first couple of days, offer your child soft, cool foods that are gentle on their mouth. Applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies are excellent options. Avoid crunchy, spicy, and hot foods because these can irritate the extraction site and increase discomfort.

Help Them Manage Discomfort

Your child may experience mild discomfort or swelling, which is a normal part of the healing process. Use any pain relief medication recommended by your dentist and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face for short intervals. Be sure to follow all instructions from your child’s dental professional regarding medication and care.

Guide Their Oral Hygiene Routine

Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial, but you will need to help your child brush and rinse carefully. Avoid brushing directly over the extraction site for the first 24 hours, and encourage gentle swishing with plain water after meals. This will help reduce the risk of infection and promote proper healing.

Offer Comfort and Emotional Support

Many children feel anxious or upset after a dental procedure. Reassure your child that it is normal to feel this way and provide extra hugs and attention. Encourage them to express their feelings, and let them know you are proud of how brave they are.

Most children recover from a tooth extraction within a few days to a week. With your support and guidance, the healing process should go smoothly!
