The Truth About Fluoride: Is It Safe for Kids?

Fluoride is considered nature’s cavity fighter because of how it reduces the risk of future decay while also strengthening enamel. This is highly beneficial for growing smiles, especially since they are more prone to cavities because of their novice brushing habits. But how safe is fluoride for children? Researchers and professionals remain divided; however, a recent study suggests it may not be as scary or harmful as some believe. Keep reading to learn why you can worry less.

Why is Fluoride Use Up for Debate?

For decades, there has been a debate about whether fluoride is safe to use. While most dentists find it an essential part of preventive care, others argue that early exposure can increase the risk of dental fluorosis.

This condition is the result of overexposure to fluoride starting at an early age. It can cause white spots to form on teeth, which is considered more of an aesthetic problem than one that actually affects oral health.

It’s believed that among individuals aged 6-49, less than one in four has fluorosis.

What Does Recent Research Say?

According to a study published by the International Association for Dental Research, there is evidence suggesting that fluoridated water ingested by children does not cause negative emotional or behavioral development issues or problems with executive functioning once they reach adolescence.

The concern was initially that too much exposure to fluoride through tap water during the first five years of life would negatively impact these aspects of development; however, this is not the case. In fact, researchers found that those who received fluoride early on were performing and developing on the same level as those who were not exposed to it.

How Soon Should Children Receive Fluoride?

Since fluoride is a natural mineral commonly found in tap water and various foods, your child will likely be exposed to it much sooner than when they begin using fluoride toothpaste. However, when it comes to brushing, the best suggestion is to start using it once your child is old enough (and capable) to spit.

You can begin by using a pea-sized amount once they reach the age of three. Make sure they understand why it’s important not to swallow toothpaste, as fluorosis can occur, but instead, they should spit it out when they’re finished brushing.

Don’t be alarmed if your child’s dentist suggests fluoride treatment. By taking a more proactive approach, your little one can avoid dental caries and potential restorative care in the future.
